It’s not uncommon for the watch cosmos to focus on a select few brands. These are often the great classics such as Rolex, Omega and Breitling. But it’s worthwhile to look outside the box: In recent years in particular, both long-established manufacturers and newcomers have presented impressive new products. Let us tell you about these 10 watch brands to have on your radar.

Innovations from new and old brands

The most popular watch manufacturers naturally enjoy the greatest attention. It’s no wonder that manufacturers such as Rolex or Omega are so successful because of their history, reliability, designs and lasting value. Nevertheless, it is worth keeping an eye on the entire market as a watch aficionado: While young brands such as U-Boat and Cvstos impress with their inventiveness, established manufacturers such as Oris and Panerai surprise with new models and innovations. A lot has happened in recent years in particular - the following Top 10 watch brands confirm this.

Panerai

Panerai has been manufacturing watches since the 1930s - at that time specifically for the Italian Navy. The watches are unmistakable because of their distinctive case style and the so-called sandwich dials. From the very beginning, Panerai, as a marine supplier, has purchased movements - formerly from Rolex, later from ETA SA. However, since the launch of the P.2002 calibre in 2005, Panerai has been manufacturing its own movements. In the meantime, the entire production has been presented on in-house calibres. In addition, the collection was expanded in 2016 to include the Luminor Duo series, which offers up to 40 percent slimmer watch cases: novelties you should have a look at.

Jaeger-LeCoultre

Founded in 1833, Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of Switzerland's largest traditional watch manufacturers, offering connoisseurs haute horlogerie. Throughout its history, the company has created a number of innovative complications, including the Atmos grandfather clock, an atmospheric watch that gains its power reserve from minimal temperature changes, and numerous further developments of the sophisticated tourbillon, such as the Gyrotourbillon. The most famous model is the Reverso, launched in 1931 and still in production today. In 2018, Jaeger-LeCoultre launched a new edition of the Polaris collection, following on from the 1968 Polaris.

Sinn

Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH was founded in 1961 in Frankfurt by the professional pilot Helmut Sinn. Since then, the company has focused on instrumental wrist watches designed for use both under water and in the air. The craftsmanship of the watches is excellent. Over the decades, the company has produced numerous developments that guarantee the ideal use of watches in demanding situations (such as DIAPAL, Ar-Trockenhaltetechnik, Hydro, TEGIMENT). Sinn's greatest classics are the three-hand watch 556 and the instrumental pilot's chronograph 103.

Oris

The independent manufacturer Oris was founded in 1904 in Hölstein, Switzerland. Since the turn of the millennium, Oris has offered wristwatches for the four areas of diving, culture, aviation and motor sports. The most popular models are the Heritage-inspired Sixty Five collection, which has recently been expanded to include various bronze models, and the Oris Aquis series with up to 500-metre water-resistant diving watches. Since its foundation, the company has been independent and exclusively manufactures mechanical watches - together with the convincing designs of recent years, Oris is an insider tip for lovers. In addition, the company supports numerous environmental protection projects - something important and relevant in this day and age.

Fortis

Fortis was founded at the beginning of the 19th century in Grenchen, Switzerland, and is known above all for its pilot watches, which were added to the range in 1987. After Fortis had run into financial difficulties, the young entrepreneur Jupp Philipp took over the company in 2018. The traditional brand exudes potential and should definitely be kept in mind. This year, the Fortis PC-7 Team Aeromaster Editions, a duo of a three-hand watch and a typical Fortis chronograph, were introduced.

Hermès

Hermès is known above all for high-quality leather goods and textiles from the luxury segment. Although wristwatches have been part of the brand since the 1970s, Hermès models have never been particularly present on the watch scene. For some years now, things have been different: with the launch of Slim D'Hermès in 2015, the French luxury company presented an attractive dresswatch equipped with a calibre from the Vaucher Fleurier Group's own manufacture. The Arceau models presented two years later show the impressive horological level Hermès has reached. The Hermès Arceau L'Heure De La Lune especially, which was presented in 2019, turned out to be a big success.

U-Boat

Italo Fontana founded the company U-Boat in 2000 in memory of his grandfather, who designed 65 millimetre wristwatches for the Italian Navy in the 1940s. U-Boat mainly builds striking watches, which have their crown - including a crown bow reaching up to five o'clock - on the left side. In 2018, U-Boat introduced a watch that gives hope for more interesting models in the years to come - the U-Boat Capsoil: The 45 millimetre wristwatch has an oil filling between the dial and the watch glass, which makes for an impressive black.

Cvstos

Despite only being around for ten years, the Cvstos manufacturer, founded in 2005, already finds itself in the Haute Horlogerie squad. No wonder, since the founders have an impressive provenance: Antonio Terranova was a constructor and designer at TAG Heuer, Sassoun Sirmakes is the son of the Richard Mille board member Vartan Sirmakes. Cvstos recently unveiled the Challenge III chronographs, available in a range of colours, with the tonneau shape typical of the brand and a skeleton dial.

Avantist

Avantist was founded by a watch lover for watch lovers. The company is just four years old and has already participated in the prestigious Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève in the Men's Complications category. Avantist focuses on high-end complications and noble complications. Tourbillons and materials such as gold and tourmalines are therefore typical of the watches. The figurehead of the young Manufacture is the La Majesté Tourbillon: the calibre of the watch (base: Concepto 8100) has a sapphire plate which, when viewed, gives the impression that the movement floats in the watch.

Tudor

The subsidiary brand of Rolex has been in existence since 1926. Since the launch of the Heritage line in 2010, Tudor has been a shooting star in the watch world. While Rolex focuses on evolution and durability, the Tudor models are more experimental and versatile. The Tudor Heritage Black Bay has especially become one of the most popular watch models on the market within a few years. The Black Bay is a tribute to the Submariners, but still has its own and above all independent attitude. Every year Tudor releases new exciting models so we definitely think it’s worth keeping an eye on this brand.
