TAG Heuer is a well known and innovative manufacturer in today’s world of fine timepieces. The name has been closely associated with auto racing and the world of motorsports. Since its founding, TAG Heuer has focused on precision and the development of instrumental chronographs, which are evidently important in terms of motorsports performance. This week, we are happy to explore the history of this renowned watchmaking brand and present to you some of the most popular models currently available at CHRONEXT

The noteworthy innovations of Edouard Heuer

In 1860, at just 20 years old, Edouard Heuer founded his watchmaking brand in the Swiss Canton of Jura under the name Heuer. Early on, Heuer timepieces were relied upon for timing sports events and so it comes as no surprise that the brand developed a strong association with the world of professional sports shortly after the founding of the company. In its early years, Heuer invented and patented the oscillating pinion, which is still and essential component of mechanical chronographs today.

Heuer: a focus on professional racing

Over time, Heuer’s affinity for precise timekeeping narrowed to focus on the field of professional racing. In the 1930s, the Autavia wristwatch, which was inspired by the dashboard of a racing automobile, was introduced to the market. In 1985, Heuer joined forces with the TAG Group, which – in line with the ambitions of Heuer – was active in motorsports. Under the name TAG Heuer, the watchmaker gained in popularity for designing a Porsche engine for Formula One. The TAG Heuer brand also sponsored Formula One teams including Wiliams and Ferrari and provided the race with over ten years of official timekeeping expertise.

A breakthrough in mechanical innovations

Throughout the years, TAG Heuer has provided the watchmaking word with countless mechanical innovations. In addition to the oscillating pinion, the manufacturer produced a stopwatch accurate to 1/100th of a second in 1916. More recently, TAG Heuer introduced the Monaco V4, which is an innovative movement that is driven by belts rather than gears. In 2010, the brand introduced its first in-house movement – the Calibre 1887.

TAG Heuer Aquaracer Calibre 5

Highly characteristic of TAG Heuer, the Aquaracer Calibre 5 has a sporty and elegant appeal. The diving features of this popular timepiece can be noticed at first glance thanks to a bold 41 mm case and bold hand-applied indexes. The model is water resistant up to 300 metres and features a unidirectional ceramic bezel. As the name of this Aquatimer suggests, it is powered by the Calibre 5, which is based on the ETA 2428-2 and provides an exquisite level of precision.
