Since 1997, Montblanc has been known not only for its premium fountain pens, but also for its luxury Swiss watches. Montblanc timepieces all feature sophisticated movements, first class materials and superior workmanship. Perhaps the most famous of Montblanc watches is the Nicolas Rieussec chronograph.

  • In 1906 August Eberstein started producing fountain pens in Hamburg. The brand name “Montblanc” has been around since 1910.

  • Since 1997, Montblanc has also produced wristwatches for men and women.

  • Famous names spotted with Montblanc watches include Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo and Olivia Palermo.

  • Montblanc is active in cultural and social issues, as exemplified by its strong support for UNICEF.

More than just fountain pens

Montblanc was originally a manufacturer of high end writing instruments, although it's now equally well known for luxury watches, leather goods and jewellery. This Hamburg-based company was founded in 1906 by the German engineer August Eberstein. He started by making fountain pens, which he would sell to stationery dealers across Hamburg and Berlin. In 1910 he came up with the name “MONTBLANC”, and nine years later he opened a store in Hamburg dedicated to his chic new lines of wares.

During the mid 1990s, Montblanc's product portfolio rapidly expanded. In addition to fine writing implements, Montblanc now also produced and sold leather goods such as handbags and belts, as well as necklaces, rings, cufflinks and other fine jewellery. Sunglasses and perfume were quicly added to the roster too, and, since 1997, wristwatches.

Montblanc has two watch factories. Its factory in Le Locle in the Neuchâtel Jura is where the brand's more standard watches have been manufactured since 1997. Every year it makes around 70,000 watches, which retail for between £2,600 and £3,500. In addition, Montblanc acquired the former Minerva watch factory in Villeret. Here the more exclusive watches of the Villeret 1858 series are carefully crafted. Depending on the specifications, these can cost anywhere between £53,400 and £356,000, a price range that puts Montblanc watches at the very summit of the luxury market.

The Montblanc watch collections

Exclusive, precise and elegant

Montblanc watches come in several different collections, all of which share the brand's traits of exclusivity, elegance and precision.

Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec

The Nicolas Rieussec is no ordinary Montblanc. Ticking away inside it is the company's first mechanical movement. The series was named after and inspired by Nicolas Rieussec, the inventor of the chronograph. Different versions of the model are available, giving watch lovers an extra element of choice. The finest materials are beautifully crafted in this ingenious design, which looks equally smart whether worn during the day with office attire or at a gala event with your best evening suit.

Montblanc Villeret

The Montblanc Villeret collection includes some particularly fine timepieces of the ultimate premium quality. Montblanc watches like the Villeret Exotourbillon Rattrapante boast the sort of sophisticated, fiendishly intricate complications that fascinate connoisseurs of horology. This collection also includes some vintage-style Montblanc watches that demonstrate the brand's love of traditional watchmaking.

Montblanc Heritage Spirit

The Montblanc Heritage Spirit collection also draws on the past for inspiration. Exuding nostalgic appeal, these timepieces are the embodiment of the finest Swiss watchmaking.

Montblanc Bohème

The Montblanc watches in the Boheme collection were specially designed for the slender wrists of ladies. Finely engraved dials, chic date windows and elegantly slim cases are the hallmarks of this showstopping line. The Montblanc Bohème comes in a number of different versions, so that female buyers can pick and choose their favourites. With its restrained elegance, a Montblanc Bohème will still look great on the end of your arm whatever the changes in fashion.

Montblanc Timewalker

The Montblanc Timewalker Collection brings fine watchmaking into the 21st century. These flamboyant men's watches exude modernity and enthusiasm for technology thanks to their dazzling array of sophisticated features.

Montblanc Star 4810

The Montblanc Star 4810 collection is a true flagship design. It's available as a chronograph or with an automatic movement, and in stainless steel or rose gold. And of course there are its equally delightful sister collections, the Montblanc Star Classique and the Montblanc Star.

Company commitment

Art and Culture

The brand gets involved in a wide range of artistic and cultural causes. The Montblanc Cultural Foundation has been a champion of contemporary arts, youth theatre and classical music projects worldwide since 1992. In addition to promoting young artists, it awards prizes to patrons of the arts and collaborates closely with many cultural and social institutions. Up and coming young artists such as Gabriele Picco, Fabian Reimann or Michael Hakimi have exhibited their works in Montblanc boutiques as a result of this initiative.

Montblanc has also been a major supporter of UNICEF through various campaigns, including its “Signature for Good” collection. For every product sold from the Signature for Good collection, part of the proceeds are donated to UNICEF. The money raised goes towards education and literacy programs in less developed countries.

Celebrities star-struck by Montblanc watches

On the wrists of actors and trendsetters

Even though Montblanc has only been making timepieces for a comparatively short time, it has quickly become a favourite among watch lovers. Likewise, many stars and celebrities now like to appear in public with a Montblanc on their wrists. They include actors Adrien Brody and Gerard Butler, while trendsetter Olivia Palermo has also chosen to accessorise her outfits with a Montblanc Star Classique Automatic.

The cinema industry is particularly replete with Montblanc fans such as Mark Ruffalo, Miles Teller, David Oyelowo, Dan Gilroy and Morten Tyldum, all of whom have been seen on the red carpet wearing one of the brand's wristwatches. But you don't have to be a celebrity to experience the pleasure of owning a Montblanc watch, with its endlessly fascinating mix of elegance, class and precision.
