Perfect timepieces – men's and ladies' watches with date displays

Watches with a date display have a special charm all of their own as well as being attractive to many watch lovers. The date display is a complication of simple elegance. It may not seem too complex at first glance, but it more than testifies to the watchmaker's technical sophistication. At the same time, it is extremely practical for everyday life - most watch wearers use the date display more frequently than other complications such as the chronograph, depth gauge or others. Simple elegance is the byword of watches with a date display.

Many watch manufacturers offer date display variations of their popular models, such as the Kon Tiki Date from Eterna. However, some date display wristwatches have also been created as special timepieces. One of the most famous of these is undoubtedly the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, considered to be among the first of its kind. Rolex introduced the Datejust in 1945 and, in doing so, once again set new standards of watchmaking. The most revolutionary feature of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust is the automatic date change.

The technology and functionality of a date display

Most wristwatches display the date using a printed disc. The numbers from one to 31 are printed on this and the date display changes once a day. With different models, this date display change can happen at different times: sometimes the switchover takes place exactly at midnight at other times it takes place at a different hour.

For most watches with a date, the display has to be manually adjusted for every month that has fewer than 31 days. It is important to note that the date should not be changed manually during the time when the watch is due to change automatically. This is usually between 10 and two o'clock but the exact time can vary from model to model.

There are superior wristwatches with a perpetual calendar complication - on these, the date never has to be adjusted. However, this technically complex function is only used for particularly high-end timepieces. Once every 100 years or so should a leap year fail do they have to be sent to the watchmaker for a manual correction!

Watches with the date – different designs

There are various types of date display watches.

On the classic date display watch, there is a window on the dial through which the date is shown. This simple model is a classic among date displays and used, for example, on the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust. Such a clear and simple display allows the wearer to see the correct date at a glance.

Specialities of the Saxony-based Glashütte Original brand are watches with big dates: the watch manufacturer uses the term 'panorama date' for its enlarged date display.

A particularly sophisticated version of the date display is the hand or pointer date. On wristwatches with a pointer display, the date is not displayed in a window but shown with the help of an additional pointer.
