What does the reference number mean?

The Omega reference numbers have become longer and longer over the decades. While the Biel-based manufactory has been using six- and seven-digit reference numbers since 1962 (XY.123.456 & XY.123.4567), the PIC system was introduced in 1988 (XXXX.YY.ZZ). Since 2007, Omega has been using the so-called PIC-14 system with the scheme AAA.BB.CC.DD.EE.FFF. From this, a great deal of information can be read. The numbers in Ref. 310.20.42.50.01.001 encode the following:

  • 310: Collection code (310 = Speedmaster)

  • 20: Material of case and band (32 = bi-colour/stainless steel)

  • 42: Diameter (= 42 millimetres)

  • 50: Calibres and complications (= OMEGA Master Chronometer Calibre 3861)

  • 01: Colour of dial and if applicable stone setting (= black)

  • 001: Model-specific code

It's all about the details

The Omega 310.20.42.50.01.001 is one of the most elaborate and detailed Limited Editions Omega has launched in recent years. The bezel, hands and dial details are in 18-carat "moonshine" gold, a slightly paler, more restrained yellow gold alloy. In contrast to the other line indices, the 11 o'clock index – matching Apollo 11 – is shown as "11". The attached Omega logo pays homage to the earlier models. The totalizer at nine o'clock is a gold representation of Buzz Aldrin leaving the lunar module Eagle. On the case back, next to Neil Armstrong's footprint, is the most famous sentence of the Apollo 11 mission: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

The stainless steel bracelet is also something exceptional. The three-link bracelet is reminiscent of early Speedmaster bracelets. The OMEGA Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 used in the Ref. 310.20.42.50.01.001 is based on the classic NASA-certified Calibre 861 but has the demanding METAS certification.
