The German manufacturer Porsche Design presented many new models at Baselworld 2018. We were able to experience the watches live, and are absolutely thrilled. Whilst the name Porsche is primarily associated with legendary sports cars, Porsche Design goes back over 40 years of history. No wonder, the manufacturer has an impressive know-how.
Porsche Design developed the first watch as early as 1972 - In cooperation with Orfina at the time. If you look at the watch, you could easily assume that it’s a recent innovation. It is quite surprising how timeless and up-to-date the model looks, and that is precisely what is typical of Porsche Design: the company (which by the way is a wholly owned subsidiary of Porsche AG) stands for a simple design and consistent product philosophy.
The latter can also be demonstrated by fact that Porsche Design has - since the launch of the first titanium watch in 1980 in cooperation with IWC - exclusively built watches made of titanium. Titanium is lighter than steel and at the same time stronger. At first, the material was used by Porsche in racing. If you take a closer look at Porsche Design watches, you will notice these small but fine parallels between racing and watchmaking repeatedly. The company knows how to transfer thoughts from racing into the art of watchmaking.
Porsche Design's design studio (Studio F. A. Porsche since 2015) is still located where Ferdinand Alexander Porsche founded it in 1972: in Zell am See. But now, let's move towards the most interesting new products that Porsche Design presented at this year's Baselworld 2018:
The Porsche Design Chronotimer Flyback Special Edition has a 42 millimetre titanium case with a black titanium carbide coating. The dial is made of carbon - a material known from racing. Red accents ensure ideal readability. The same materials that are used in Porsche cockpits are used for the leather strap. In addition, the belt has a quick-change mechanism that allows it to be changed quickly and easily.
The highlight of the watch is without question the flyback mechanism. This is particularly useful in racing, as time measurement can be restarted at the push of a button. The automatic caliber 01.200, which was specially developed for Porsche and is COSC-certified, operates in the watch. A harmoniously integrated date window is located at four o'clock. A remarkable detail is also the second display, which does not allow the exact reading of the seconds, but rather resembles a gear display.
There will be 13 different versions of the Porsche Design Chronometer Flyback Special Edition for 6,250 Euros.
From now on you will also find a flyback chronograph in the 1919 collection. The brown dial is most reminiscent of a cocoa tone and was chosen extremely well. The brown tone of the minute tones running along the outer edge of the dial changes according to the incidence of light and provides a beautiful play of colours in various shades of brown and red-brown. The bracelet is also in a brown tone. Because of the exclusive band lugs, only bracelets from Porsche Design can be attached to the watch. The chronograph has a diameter of 42 millimetres.
The Porsche Design 1919 Flyback Chronograph also features the COSC-certified 01,200 calibre, which is why the watch also has a date window at four o'clock and a striking gear display for the seconds. The watch is available in four different versions and will cost 5,950 euros.
At first glance, the Monobloc-Actuator Chronotimer Flyback Limited Edition does not seem to be a chronograph at all as the pushers are missing. The trick behind this, however, is called a "monobloc actuator". it is nothing less than a rocker switch integrated into the case and mounted on several bearings on the right side of the case.
Like the chronotimer, the 45.5 millimeter watch is made of titanium with titanium carbide coating. The caliber 01.200 has a date display at four o'clock and the typical gear display. A seven-sided anti-reflective dial on both sides allows a view of the carbon dial. The bracelet consists of a mix of rubber and Alcantara. The watch will cost 7.950,00 Euro.
