The watches worn by renowned actors and actresses during the 89th Annual Academy Awards

February 28. 2017 - by CHRONEXT

It is that time of year again: The 89th Annual Academy Awards took place on the 26th of February, 2017. The award ceremony is one of the most important events in the field of international film, and attracts countless celebrities to the red carpet each year. A highlight, of course, are the watches worn on the wrists of the stars. Time and again, numerous luxury pieces are spotted on the wrists of glamourous guests. We took a closer look and are excited to present our top 5 discoveries.

A celebration for watch lovers

The Oscars ceremony is not only a special event for film enthusiasts, but also watch lovers around the globe. Last year, for example, countless exclusive watches were spotted at the event, including Steve Carrell sporting a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual, Ryan Seacrest showcasing his Vintage Rolex Daytona Ref. 6263, and Eddie Reymayne wearing an Omega Globemaster. This year, too, we witnessed exclusive and coveted fine timepieces on various wrists (photo by the oscars).

1) Mahershala Ali & his IWC Da Vinci Chronograph

The talented actor Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor for his role in “Moonlight”. It was hard to notice the exceptional IWC DaVinci Chronograph around his wrist as he accepted his award. This sporty-elegant timepiece is limited to 1500 pieces and comes equipped with a manufactory calibre, which has a power reserve of 68 hours. Not to mention, the timepiece features a flyback chronograph and a date complication. The timepiece from the DaVinci collection fits perfectly with Ali’s evening wear. Thanks to an elegant aesthetic and a suitable 42 mm diameter, the timepiece can be paired nicely with a tuxedo.

2) Ryan Gosling & his Vintage Rolex (Presumably – a Rolex Air-King)

Ryan Gosling was nominated for best actor for his impressive performance in “La La Land”. It is well-known that the actor has an affinity for vintage timepieces and has been spotted wearing a vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox and a vintage Patek Philippe Calatrava. At this year’s Oscars, it seems as though he was wearing a vintage Rolex Air-King around his wrist, which he had also previously worn to the Golden Globes. The watch has a rather small diameter – probably measuring 34 mm – and is most probably his beloved Air-King. Thanks to its slim dimensions and timeless aesthetic, the watch fits perfectly under the sleeve of Gosling’s tuxedo.

3) Nicole Kidman and her vintage Omega “Secret”

Is it a piece of jewellery or a luxury watch? The answer is both, as the Secret combines the best of both worlds: This extraordinary watch is composed of 18 carat white gold and is encrusted with 16 baguette diamonds along with 50 more brilliantly cut diamonds. It is only at the push of a button that the Omega Secret presents one with a glance at its dial. The vintage Omega fuses refined craftsmanship with precise mechanics. The Secret hails from the Omega museum located in the Swiss town of Biel and elegantly graces the glamourous dress worn by Kidman.

4) Pharrell Williams with Richard Mille

Pharell Williams is known for his avant-garde tastes. It is no wonder then, that he sported and extraordinarily impressive timepiece on the red carpet. It could be the Richard Mille RM052, which is made evident by the striking skull on the dial. But behind the polarising optics of this watch lies a true masterpiece of Haute Horlogerie. The RM052 features a tourbillon – the production of which is considered a true discipline in the field of watchmaking. Each component of the RM052 takes a few hundred hours of complex watchmaking processes to produce. The model is limited to 21 pieces.

5) Damien Chazelle and his Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Ultra Thin Small Second

The most elegant timepiece to grace the red carpet was none other than the rose gold Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Ultra Thin Small Second on the wrist of Damien Chazelle. The elegant dress watch features a contemporary case diameter of 40 mm and measures a mere 8.6 mm in height. It is only when one takes a closer look at this timepiece that the intricate details of the watch draw its wearer under a spell. These elements include the dauphine hands and indices as well as the four golden dots on the small second, each marking a quarter of a minute.
